Validation, partnerships, and what we are learning in the field.
Lavras, Minas Gerais – 44moles, in partnership with Inventar Gmb, will conduct a controlled comparison between measurements obtained using a xylometer and data collected with our terrestrial LiDAR technology, bringing together experts and leaders in emerging forest technologies. The objective is to demonstrate, under real field conditions, the accuracy of our volume and diameter measurements and the technology’s potential for the future of forest inventory.
Short-term: 44moles is among the first LiDAR technology companies to validate its volume and diameter measurements using the xylometer method. This validation will increase confidence in LiDAR-derived DBH and volume data, providing a more efficient alternative for harvest planning without relying exclusively on destructive sampling, while also helping to improve and digitize other activities across the forestry sector.
Long-term: This test also represents a first step toward exploring new use cases for LiDAR technology. The same high-density point cloud used for forest inventory can reveal characteristics that were not part of the initial analysis, such as ant galleries in tree stems, dead trees, and potential structural defects. In this way, the technology can expand its application beyond traditional forest inventory.
